Joe Eula (1925-2004) was an American fashion illustrator prominent in the 1960s and 1970s. After being discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945, he attended the Art Students League of New York, then beginning to work with magazines, newspapers, and designers covering fashion; in the late 1960s he began to work with design in theatre. Yves Mathieu Saint Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria in 1936. At the age of 16 he enrolled in a fashion school in Paris, where he entered a student design contest sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat and won for best dress design. The winning sketch came to the attention of the director of French Vogue, who showed it to Christian Dior. Dior hired the young designer as his assistant.
